Performance Indicators – The competent teacher:
A. creates a safe and healthy environment that maximizes student learning;
This artifact addresses Standard Four: Learning Environment. In my classroom and school, it is my mission to create a safe and healthy environment where students can effectively learn. If students have to worry about things like bullying then they will have a hard time focusing on learning if they are worrying about being bullied. My idea is to have a school wide contest where students can create posters that to promote a "No Bullying" policy. Students can win prizes, but the top posters will be reproduced and posted through out the school. This is a good way to get students thinking about bullying and to also raise awareness to the harm that bullying can do. As teachers we need to create an environment that is safe, where students feel safe that is conducive for the learning of all students. Thinking about safety and not just content area is a sign that a teacher is growing and becoming a capable educator that thinks about their student as a whole and not just as a statistic.

Knowledge Indicators – The competent teacher:
A. understands principles of and strategies for effective classroom and behavior management;
This artifact addresses Standard Four: Learning Environment. This is an artifact demonstrating my knowledge of classroom and behavior management and how to create a successful and productive learning environment. This is an assignment I completed for a Special Education class that outlines classroom guidelines that would be the basis of my classroom management plan. This system of guidelines would help me maintain effective classroom and behavior management. This assignment really helped me to understand how much a classroom needs structure and showed me how I could best create structure for my classroom. A growing educator sees that a classroom needs structure, finds the issues within the classroom and either knows a strategy that will fix the issue within the classroom or can find the answer to the problem. I believe this artifact demonstrates the qualities of this type of growing educator who is a problem solver and can and will manage a classroom for an effective learning environment.
