Performance Indicators – The competent teacher:
stimulates prior knowledge and links new ideas to already familiar ideas and experiences
This artifact addresses Standard One: Teaching Diverse Students. This lesson plan is designed to "stimulate prior knowledge and link new ideas to already familiar ideas and experiences." Most students already know about Native Americans and about the United States treatment of Native Americans. But if you were to ask students about this topic they would likely know that Native Americans were treated badly, but they would not know much about the promises and treaties made with the Native Americans. I like this lesson plan because it builds on students background knowledge and also helps them see how the past actions of the United States still affect Native Americans today. I believe this artifact appropriately addresses the standard because it links students prior knowledge, but also adds to it by showing students how Native Americans are portrayed today and in the past as well as showing students how Native Americans live today due to the direct effect of Native American policies that the United States created. Lessons like these, that help students make connections and link the past and present show growth because as a teacher I have found that as I progress I am helping my students do more critical thinking assignments as opposed to just lecturing, I am asking them to think throughout lecture.

Knowledge Indicators | The competent teacher:
understands how each student constructs knowledge, acquires skills, and develops effective and efficient critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities
This artifact addresses Standard One, teaching diverse students. This artifact is a lesson plan that can be used to show how a competent teacher can know students and know how each one constructs knowledge and uses this knowledge to help students develop critical thinking skills. In this artifact I have a lesson plan that uses images to help students compare and contrast the city states of Athens and Sparta. I like this lesson because it helps students to take information, think critically about it and then come to a conclusion, but guided by activities. We discuss these as a class, then students will use textbooks to further compare and contrast these city states and as a class we will come together and discuss the similarities and differences. Then students will write which city state they would prefer to live in and tell why they would like to live there. This is a lesson plan with many different things in it in order to engage and get a variety of learners involved. Students can work together on this assignment and discussion as a class is something that I feel helps many different kinds of learners share and learn about the topic. A lesson that helps students think about material and then take a position shows that an educator is growing because it shows that an educator is thinking about a variety of skills sets in the classroom and that the educator can help students with a diverse group of learning styles to develop critical thinking skills.
